Van de Ven Double Halts Everton's Run at New Home Ground

Micky van de Ven scored twice as Tottenham prolonged their unbeaten run in away games in the Premier League and delivered Everton their initial loss at their new home.

Everton were unbeaten in their five previous fixtures at their recently opened stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock, having left Goodison Park behind after more than a century at the conclusion of last season.

But Tottenham's leader Van de Ven pounced on two occasions from corners in the opening 45 minutes to put their impressive record at jeopardy, and they were unable to mount a comeback before the midfielder - set up by ex-Everton forward the Brazilian - headed home a third to seal the victory.

Jake O'Brien believed he had levelled the scores five minutes after Van de Ven's first goal, glancing a bullet header past Guglielmo Vicario from an Everton corner.

Beto, meanwhile, failed to convert a number of opportunities, while Vicario made a succession of excellent saves to guarantee Tottenham went five matches on the road without defeat in the English top flight.

But the video assistant referee intervened, instructing Craig Pawson to check the score on the screen and the official ruled that Jack Grealish and Iliman Ndiaye were in an illegal position and had interfered with the Spurs keeper.

This victory elevates the manager's team into third place in the division, five points off local foes and leaders Arsenal.

Everton remain 14th and sit six points clear of the drop zone.

After a drab weekday performance in the Champions League against Monaco, where they managed a only attempts on goal, Frank opted for the French striker in attack instead of former Toffees player the Brazilian.

The summer signing was unable to influence the game before being substituted for the substitute after 60 minutes on the pitch, but it emerged he proved unnecessary in the final outcome.

Centre-back Van de Ven transformed into an attacking force to be reckoned with.

Spurs' first goal came from a well-worked corner routine, with the midfielder heading the ball back across the face of goal for an free the defender to head home.

And Ven de Ven - stepping up as skipper in the Argentine's unavailability - added his second in added time as he rose above Jordan Pickford to nod in.

The Dutchman was equally impressive in defence, partnering effectively with his defensive colleague as the pair dealt excellently with the 34 crosses sent their way by Everton.

Everton's new home had been a fortress, but it seems the novelty may have worn off somewhat and fans flocked to the gates after the midfielder's final goal for Spurs.

The end in Everton's unbeaten home run will not be a massive concern for David Moyes, but their attacking woes will be.

Beto and Thierno Barry - the Everton's pair of established centre-forwards - had scored only a single goal combined before the weekend's outing.

And they were unable to contribute to that poor record on a wet and gloomy evening on Merseyside.

The striker's form was epitomized when he opted to overhead kick a clear chance from close range, despite having space and opportunity to readjust for a more conventional attempt that would have challenged the keeper.

Barry, too, failed to influence the game after replacing Beto in the second half.

It was not for a shortage of chance. The majority of the home side's attacks came through the winger and Ndiaye, who tirelessly delivered dangerous balls into the Tottenham box.
