The acclaimed crime series Line of Duty will make a comeback for its seventh season, announced by the broadcaster.
An upcoming six-part series written by Jed Mercurio will begin filming in Belfast in the coming months, as confirmed by the production team.
Vicky McClure expressed excitement about the return, stating she was "so excited" about the show's renewal. Her co-star remarked, "How wonderful it is to know that the main trio will be reuniting together next year."
The last series wrapped up in recent years with a finale that drew in more than 17 million audience members. Rumors about a new season have been circulating ever since, but confirmation only arrived recently.
New Challenges for AC-12
The seventh season begins with AC-12 no longer existing and renamed as the Inspectorate of Police Standards, according to production details.
Martin Compston's character, Kate Fleming, and Adrian Dunbar's part continue working to tackle corruption within the police force.
Their work "has never been more difficult", and in this climate, the trio are assigned their "most delicate case so far."
Fresh Face and Intricate Plot
An additional officer, Det Insp Dominic Gough, described as a charismatic officer known for takedowns of organized crime, is accused of misusing his authority to become a offender.
However, this investigation might serve as a deliberate distraction from a larger danger still operating in the background, plot details hinted.
Speaking about the renewal, Jed Mercurio commented: "All cast and crew are deeply thankful to the dedicated viewers."
"We're privileged to have had so many followers watch the ups and downs of the unit over multiple series and we couldn't be more delighted to be coming back for a new season."
He added: "Corruption in this country was thought to be over while the series was not airing, so I've been forced to use my imagination."
Cast Reactions
Martin Compston called appearing in the series as "the role of a career".
"Beyond the show's success but the colleagues I've collaborated with I now call some of my closest friends."
"I can't wait to wear the uniform again and get the team back together," he said.
The Nottingham-born actress remarked: "Obviously I'm very happy Line of Duty is back! Can't wait to work with Jed, Compston and Dunbar again. The city, we'll be there shortly!"
The veteran actor commented: "While anticipating the unit return, what a joy it is to know that the central trio will be back filming next year."
"Pleased with the announcement and looking forward to those mercurial twists and turns."
Show History
Line of Duty launched in the early 2010s and evolved into one of the most popular TV dramas of the last decade, attracting guest stars such as Kelly Macdonald.
Broadcasters haven't revealed exactly the new season will hit screens.
The finale of season six drew the long-running storyline about the hunt for kingpin known as "H" to a conclusion, and the creative team said at the time there were no plans for additional seasons.
Nevertheless, the network announced on Tuesday that a new season is now in development.
