Fed Cuts Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Year During Economic Uncertainty

The US central bank reduced borrowing costs on Wednesday, marking the second reduction in the current year during financial volatility originating from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Decision Comes at Unprecedented Moment for Federal Reserve

The decision to cut the key rate by a quarter point to a range of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an unprecedented moment for the central bank. The institution has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs even with ongoing price increases.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Labor Market Shifts

In a statement, the Federal Reserve said that the unemployment rate had increased but remains low. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the release notes. “Price increases has moved up and remains moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Complicates Central Bank’s Task

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in American history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Gathering of important financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the shutdown.

Data Gap Affects Policy Decisions

The Fed usually analyzes BLS data to assess labor market conditions, such as the count of new jobs added to the economy and the present unemployment rate. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and provided a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the employment scene in August.

The figure of jobs created to the economy in the summer month was down by over 100k since the spring, and joblessness crept up to 4.3% – the highest since 2021.

Alternative Reports Indicate Ongoing Decline

Though BLS was set to release last month’s job market report in early October, it halted its release once the closure started. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor reported recently that the private sector eliminated 32,000 positions in September, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for labor has declined significantly,” central bank head Jerome Powell said recently, a trend he had previously said stems from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Shows Gradual Increase

Though BLS’s jobs report has been suspended, the agency still issued its price statistics for September that showed that costs are rising, although gradually. Costs increased 3% over the last year, the peak since January. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
