Last October, the late-night programming block welcomed back its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. But, later that same month, the network introduced a brand-new animated series with a markedly softer feel. Haha, You Clowns emerged as sweet and soothing, reminiscent of a animated take of a contemplative talk show. During a period often defined by cynicism, this show's earnestness resonated deeply and propelled it a surprise hit.
On December 18th, Adult Swim confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for two more seasons. This provides showrunner Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to expand upon the story of the Campbell family. The series centers on three well-mannered teenage brothers whose central trait is their deep love for their widowed father, with Cappa voicing for all four main characters.
"My deepest thanks go to the viewers of the show who welcomed the series and helped it grow," said Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."
In the same announcement laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "profoundly sincere and uniquely eerie." He thanked the fans who embraced the show and advocated for its peculiarly charming sensibility.
"All of you showed up for this new show, praised it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a gentle counterpart" to other adult animated fare. Viewers found something unexpectedly cozy about following this endearing family go about their daily lives.
At the time, creator Joe Cappa stated his hope to move the comedy genre beyond its current cynical streak. He traced this trend to various cultural shifts.
“There's this level of irony that we are trapped in,” noted Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we just have to laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”
Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa could potentially help usher in that change he described. At a minimum, the renewal guarantees audiences more opportunities to enjoy the heartfelt moments of the unique Campbell clan.
The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. All episodes is available for streaming on HBO Max.
