A Pig's Tale: Pig Named Six Seven Spared by Miami Dade County Mayor.

Although not quite at the equivalent scale as sparing holiday birds, but the mayor of Miami-Dade had her own presidential-style act this week by ritually sparing the life of a swine named Six Seven.

Daniella Levine Cava executed the holiday gesture at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the center of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood.

“This animal is guiltless. She is worthy of this pardon. No offenses are on her docket,” Levine Cava said in a speech with inescapable allusions to the sheer volume of executive clemencies issued since the beginning of a new presidential term.

“Except perhaps for eating half a dozen apples per day,” Levine Cava continued. “I hope she experiences a lengthy and joyful existence free from concern.”

This ceremony, which both honors and questions the region’s Hispanic tradition of consuming swine during the holidays, was created to emulate the yearly bird sparing at the White House.

The swine, donated by a first responder, was christened after the current slang trend of young people exclaiming “six-seven” – originating from a musical verse – often for no discernable reason. The phrase became so pervasive that a major dictionary recently named “6-7” its annual vocabulary selection.

A Future Secured

The pardoned swine is now set to enjoy its days at a rural sanctuary “distant from barbecues and spits”, according to the organizers' announcement.

“This swine clemency has become one of our favorite ways to kick off the festive period,” said Eric Castellanos, in a particularly upbeat message.

“It captures the character of Miami: happy, diverse, and based in heritage that unite the community. Annually, we are honored to observe tradition and kindness in a way unique to Miami.”

Attendees enjoyed a meat-free selection of spinach fritters and cafecito as they toasted the swine's new lease on life.
